Christiaan Postma

June 26th, 2008

Christiaan Postma has married function and design, til death do they part, in this calendar wallpaper. His clock is another feat of intellect and imagination, composed of 150 individual clockworks and laid out in such a way that all the tiny ticking hands spell out the hour on the hour. Brilliant.

Thomas Wold’s fractured fairy tales

June 23rd, 2008

Thomas Wold is an experienced designer, having reincarnated from (and back into) painter, sculptor, fabricator, and decorator. In my opinion, that’s the best way to go about settling into a career. After all, I just graduated from university with no trade and no job. I know all about “work” in the “real” world.

Jokes and jibes aside, one look through Wold’s online portfolio (check it out here) will tell you everything you need to know about him - namely that his design style is fun, clever, and distinctive.

A New Leaf

June 23rd, 2008

Shaz Madani has created these beautiful portfolio pieces for Arctic Paper. Unfortunately, they’re not something you can buy and put on your wall, -sob- so we’ll have to go the next best thing and ogle them here. Lets just hope our drool doesn’t short out the laptop (again).

Happy Capsule Letters

Another trinket picked up in VivoCity shopping center in Singapore Mid Valley Megamall in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last month. Brilliant note-passing strategy.

New definitions of decoration - heat sensitive wallpaper

June 17th, 2008

Shi Yuan (shiyuan.co.uk) has introduced a wallpaper that bursts into bloom when it comes into contact with heat — in the case of the images above, the blooms appear when the radiator is on and disappear when it’s off.

A print a day

June 14th, 2008

This girl is cranking out the art like there’s no tomorrow and my God, that is so inspiring. I am humbled in the presence of workhorse designers and artists. Master, teach me.

Singapore sling

June 8th, 2008

During my first visit to Asia, I decided that in another life I am actually a cute Japanese girl. In this other life, I collect pencil cases and cell phone charms. I buy almost exclusively from vending machines. And real world, present tense me has not even hit Tokyo. Yet.

One of the first things I picked up as a gift/souvenir was one of Tomy’s solar-powered bobble heads. In Singapore, at least, these cheerful little guys were everywhere… the dashboards of taxi cabs, grocery stores, hip international toy stores, department stores. I ended up buying one in Malaysia for about $10 USD for my good friend Ryan, a graphic designer based in Madison, Wisconsin. It’s sort of a frivolous thing, a bobble head toy, even when it’s powered by not just motion but the sun, but the second I saw these guys nodding mellowly all over Singapore, I saw them nodding at graphic designers all across America. Calm and dependently affirmative, just so long as they see some light of day. Adorable and inspiring, basically, without the hassle of dander and Zyrtec.

Sorry - I don’t have a good picture yet, stand by.

Holidaze

May 19th, 2008

I just graduated from college. This should explain where I’ve been the last couple weeks. Tomorrow I leave for a week-long stay in Singapore and Malaysia, followed by another week in Los Angeles. So that explains where I’ll be for the next 2 weeks. After that, I’ll be here.

Pop-up book or discarded Dogville set?

April 19th, 2008

by Jin-Hui Kim

How about a really BIG pop-up book? This is a spread from Space Book, designed by Jin-Hui Kim. I like everything about this concept, the possibilities for photo shoots, film sets, and playhouses are endless. (via yankodesign, more pictures over there if you fancy a gander)

Vinyl sleeve inspiration

April 18th, 2008

The Record Envelope - the ‘little’ library of factory sleeves - is a jackpot for vinyl collectors as well as graphic artists. Oh the eye candy, it goes on forever.
